A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MISSISSIPPI LIBRARY COMMISSION FOR THE CELEBRATION OF ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF MISSISSIPPI'S SUMMER LIBRARY READING PROGRAM.

WHEREAS, to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Mississippi's Summer Library Reading Program, children's librarians throughout the state selected "Mississippi Magic" as the theme for the Summer of 1999; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Jean Hudspeth and Ms. Lynn F. Shurden have coordinated the development of this annual program which includes the selection of art work; development of the planning manual; distribution of posters, bookmarks and certificates; and presentation of training workshops based on the theme; and

WHEREAS, the art work for "Mississippi Magic 1999" has been created by the art classes in the Carroll County School District which includes students grades seven to twelve from the Carrollton and Vaiden areas under the direction of Ms. Kitty Cook Hodges and Ms. Jean Aldridge; and

WHEREAS, the art students who have participated in this program include Lawanda Cox, Delana Denton, Claude Fluker, Joseph Germany, Michael K. Jones, Talluah Lawrence, Lori Lee, John Lott, Tamesha Lott, Kelley Maddickes, Jamie McKenzie, Ron Myers, Justin D. Nobles, Adam Peacock, Jessica Phillips, Barbara Ricks, Anthony Smith, Michael A. Smith, Quinnis Stokes, Tori Thomas, Kim Turner and Stephanie Walker; and

WHEREAS, the art students took the concept "Mississippi Magic" which includes folklore, people, land, humor, music, creatures and critters, legends and life to develop an idea and interpret it into art; and

WHEREAS, the students regard Mississippi as a magical land with watery, swampy places which have special creatures living in them; for example, the alligator who is a magician and serves as a guide for this summer's program; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Library Commission funded the preparation of the art work through a grant to assist the Carroll County School District for the purchase of additional art supplies and equipment for the J.Z. George High School; and

WHEREAS, for the past thirty years, the Mississippi Library Commission has been sponsoring summer reading programs in the public libraries throughout the state, which attract approximately 34,000 children who read almost 750,000 library books and other resources during the summer; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend such outstanding programs as the Mississippi Library Commission Summer Library Reading Program, which is designed to improve the reading skills of the children of the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Mississippi Library Commission on the Thirty-Year Anniversary of Mississippi's Summer Library Reading Program and express our deepest appreciation to the commission for its dedication to educating the children of this state.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Library Commission, the Carroll County School District and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
